Several of those volunteers were Sailors from the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), ready to dedicate their morning helping the shelter in any way they could. What was needed from these Sailors Aug. 1 were their careful hands in tending to the outside of the building, creating an even more welcoming environment than what was already there.

According to the detachment, the 1st SFG Soldiers initially conducted train-the-trainer with the cadet platoon and company leadership during the Leader Training Period of Cadet Field Training. Following the arrival of the rising sophomore class, the cadets formed into seven companies consisting of roughly 200 cadets each. Over the next two weeks, each cadet company filtered through the detachment's introduction to patrolling lane. The training largely focused on patrolling, small-unit tactics, and introduction to basic branches.

The waiver now allows E-6 Sailors and senior enlisted who have completed 19 years of service and will end their careers at the 20-year mark to use Navy COOL's services, including possible funding, to earn civilian credentials. These Sailors must be able to complete the requirements no less than 60 calendar days prior to their separation.
